Are We Smartphone
Are We Smartphone
July 13th, 2017
In our current globlised world we are surrounded by advanced technology. Technology is a fixed part of our daily lives, whether it is setting our alarms on our smartphone or watching the morning news on TV while having breakfast. In comparison with days gone by, we have many platforms for instant communication worldwide with the help of technology. No doubt something which would have been a major luxury hundreds of years ago. However, while there are many positives to advanced technology, there is also a dark side.
The dark side of technology is not the technology itself, but the user behind it. In this modern society technology is easily accessible, but the way it is used can be a downfall. We see our children on the news brawling with others, but rarely do we see the person recording the footage put down the camera to prevent the fight going further. In fact capturing it live has become a goal for some YouTubers, especially with the advent of Google or Snapchat glasses. This is a simple yet common example of the misuse of technology.
This common act further develops to footage of domestic violence or torture that is viewed, but never resolved by the users or bystanders. These problems are not a fault of advanced technology, but the way individuals use technology. The entire world has a moral responsibility to use these platforms for good and bring about positivity with action, yet users often choose to ignore major issues.
Other disadvantages include:
- Potential health risks
- Unsociable behaviour
- Distraction and over stimulation
On the other side, there are so many advantages with improved technology in our world. With the help of technology, we are able to raise instant awareness of any issue at hand (as seen this month with a Tsunami threat in Japan). We are able to advance our skill sets in any given field such as mechanical and medical and most importantly with progressive technology, we are able to share information to any part of the world to provide resource assistance where needed.
Other advantages of smartphones are:
- Connects and unites people
- Information at hand
- Can operate 24-7
- Ability to call for help from remote places
- New business opportunities with mobile apps
If we use technology in a positive and mindful way there can be so much to gain and achieve in our world.
