Have you ever sat in front of a painting and had tears stream down your cheeks? I have. But I have also sat in front of a painting and said, “That’s not art, that’s terrible.” So, how does someone decide which is art and which is not?
Well, opinion is a lot of it. But really, opinion is none of it. Isn’t something created by definition art? Who are we really to say that something isn’t art? A person who calls themselves an artist has poured their heart and soul into something imagined and created and called it art. Therefore it is. Yet, a person looks at it and doesn’t like it, so therefore it isn’t?
I like to think that everything is art, and actually nothing is. I enjoy my time in art galleries and exhibitions. I enjoy listening to music. And I enjoy watching movies and television shows. Some people will tell me music, movies and television shows are not art. I disagree. Actually, I play a lot of video games like Braid, Limbo or Journey and refer to them as art. Many times I’ve tried to convince others of this, but often get laughed at. But surely, if I believe it is, doesn’t that make it so?
Art from the perspective of artists
I Googled famous artist quotes for their definition and perspective on art specifically, and got a ridiculous amount of diverse definitions. Here’s some of them:
“Making money is art and working is art and good business is the best art”~ Andy Warhol
“If I create from the heart, nearly everything works: if from the head, almost nothing.” ~ Marc Chagall
“The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live.” ~ Auguste Rodin
“Art is what you can get away with” ~ Andy Warhol (another one, because we can)
“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” ~ Edgar Degas
You see, even they couldn’t some down to one definition. So, how do we really decide?
Actually, I don’t think we should. I don’t think anyone should. I think we should all look at everything and see art. I think the world is artistic and everyone in it is an artist. I think the guy walking past me in different coloured shoes and a pink hat is an artist in his own mind, creating a piece of art in the clothes he is wearing. I like to believe that the engineer that built the apartment block that I live in, is an artist too.
So, the most important thing I am speaking about today I guess is, I would like everyone to open their minds and think that everything you see is art. Having this mindset will create a much more beautiful world, and I believe, much more beautiful attitudes in life.
